What Makes America Great?

I was on a family trip in Europe when I saw a magazine headline that said, ‘America, A Fractured Empire.’ My first thought was that the author didn’t know the heart of America if he or she thought we couldn’t overcome our issues and come out better. My second thought was that the world doesn’t see us as strong right now. They see us as divided, and that is never good on the world stage. This thought was confirmed when I spoke with several locals who are fascinated by our politics right now. One man told me that America needs to become strong again. Another man said he thinks we will have a civil war because there is so much hate and division. I think they are both wrong because America is great despite our issues. Here is my opinion on why.

Our country is built on a concept of freedom and choice. I am thankful that I live in a country where freedom is so highly regarded. We need to guard that freedom because it could slip through our fingers with too much government control. We also need to replace hate with understanding and respect for individual freedoms. I know we can do that, and this fact makes us great.

We come together in difficult times. With all the devastation from weather this year the outpouring of support and donations from people has been heartwarming. Although Covid was a terrible time when many of us lost loved ones, the food banks and donations from local…
