Using Silence as a Tool

We have all heard the expression ‘Silence is golden’, but do you realize how powerful it can be in your life? You can use silence to your advantage in several situations. Here are a few examples.

When you remain silent, it makes others uncomfortable and causes them to talk more than they normally would. As they continue to fill the void your silence has created, they reveal more and more valuable information. Experiment with it the next time you are in a conversation. Saying less brings you more.

One of our weakest skills is listening. Most people are waiting to jump into a conversation instead of hearing what is being said. Listening can lead to learning, and we can only do that when we are silent.

Silence can be healing. Sharing quiet moments with others can create stronger bonds. When we find some time to sit in silence we can regroup and think clearly.

Silence can be a form of compassion. Most people need to share their story, but so often we are interrupted while telling it while someone shifts the story to himself. When we are silent we show someone we value what is being said.

Silence can be a parenting tool. I remember many times when my children had done something wrong, and as I stood in front of them wondering how I should discipline them, they would say, “I know, I’m grounded.” I didn’t even have to speak.

Silence can be used in so many ways, and you don’t have to do a thing.
