Medium can be a great resource for a writer whether you want to earn money, or your goal is to use it to display your work. How you use your time on the site can make a big difference, and not only to you.

Start by deciding your goals for using the site, then decide where you want to invest your time and energy. As a writer, you need to build a body of work that people will want to read, so some of your time has to be devoted to creating, but would you be surprised if I told you that writing alone isn’t the main way to earn money on Medium?

Consider that most people on Medium are doing the same thing you are, so many are writing as many articles as they can instead of reading other articles like yours. Since your Medium income depends on how many reads your article receives, you have to find a way to pull people in and convince them to read. You can do this by creating catchy titles, reading others’ articles, and commenting on them. This will encourage people to read yours as well.

Reading the articles of other writers can also open up your perspective to new ideas, and many of the articles can help you learn and grow as a writer. Reflect on why some of those articles are popular.

When someone comments on your article, respond, and consider reading something that person has written.

Medium gives you the option to share your published article on other social media sites. You can use these articles to build your presence elsewhere.

Interacting with other writers gives you the chance to build connections that may help your career.

There are many ways to spend your time on Medium. Decide what is right for you.
